Germany Meets Ghana In The Bush

The first day of May is a national holiday in Germany. There
are also customs that reflect this day including smitten men getting a Maibaum
(May tree) for their beloved.
After watching a Thai action movie, we prepared to retire to
bed. Making my way to our bedroom he stopped and said, “I will meet you there
after cleaning my teeth”. Tucked cosily into our bed, I read a book while
waiting. I drifted off to sleep. Strange noises downstairs woke me up. Checking
my phone clock, it was 2am. Who could it be? The pillow next to me was
untouched. Worried I got up and sat. Then he came in. “Where have you been?” I asked.
“You will see in the morning,” he said.
In the morning I went out of the house to throw rubbish.
Right there on our front yard was this beautiful birch tree decorated with a red
heart shaped plaque. There was also a trail of saw dust which started from the
front steps to behind the house where he had sat to work on the tree. The teeth
cleaning was an escape to go and hunt for a birch tree in the late hours of midnight.
“How did he manage bringing it here?” I wondered. Hugging him I asked him to
tell me how that night errand was.

spotted one in a bush that’s about 30 minutes’ walk away from our home. At one
moment he was spooked by a deep voice from the bush.
“Hey man, can you lend me your professional saw. I only have
a pen knife.”
“What are you doing here?”
“You mean what`s a Ghanaian man doing in a bush in the
middle of the night? Same like you man, I am looking for a tree for my girl.”
While passer-by were out there carrying their drunkenness safely
home, two men carried trees on their shoulders.
The dusty trails led to the house of a boy who fancied her. In
the old days parents reprimanded intimate relations before marriage. Therefore
girls would get up early to clean away all the traces.  I was lucky that my lawyer was around to clean
away the evidence of my love affair.
