The early bird prompt challenges to write a poem after studying a piece of art that interests you in the online galleries of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. This poem is inspired by ‘The Cup of Tea’ ca. 1880–81 by Mary Cassatt.
Lub dub! Lub dub!
A heart’s life is an ordinary event
each day boiling, towards life,
in the solitude or noises of its kitchen.
Tun tun! Tun tun!
It’s a ritual of everyday life
to send a body to its fate
with drinking through valves.
Hum hum! Hum hum!
To the songs your heart sings
shaped like handles to perform
in the vessels, away from spectators.
Tac tac! tac tac!
Hold your heart dearly, like a cup
of tea, spilling to a life of budding
and flowering until the end of life.
It is almost done, this heart
sipped behind the curtain of flesh
and we won’t know if it brewed enough.
